The Tesseract

Got hold of The Tesseract from M (finally). Read it with gusto and I was not disappointed.

The tesseract, the point where a cross is made. 3-dimensional. or 4-dimensional. unravelled. this is what the book is like. several lives without any means to intersect somehow do without any explanation. this book makes no excuses, it's simple, it's complicated, it's controlled yet all over the place. The grittiness of Manila provides the perfect backdrop for the intersecting stories, it takes me back to the sights, sounds and smells of Malate, the Manila of my earlier years. To have a writer write about the streets of a place you thought you knew so well makes it almost tangible. You forget what it's like to walk those streets and to be in that place and Alex Garland takes you right to the heart of it even to the places you made yourself believe didn't exist.

Master storyteller. Highly recommended.
